Dharmasoka College is one of the top graded Buddhist government schools ever built in 19th century. It has been developed in a large scale and today the name “Dharmasoka” has been popular not only in southern region but in island wide.
Dharmasoka College is situated in Galle District, Ambalangoda. It consists of nearly over 5000 students and about 180 teachers in the staff.
School has maintained a high standard in education and sports over the years as well. Especially Badminton, cricket, table tennis and swimming are the leading sports events in our school. Subjects like Dancing, Eastern and Western music have also played a crucial role in our school to uphold the name Sokians. Each year approximately, 100 students enter universities from science, maths, commerce and arts streams.
Mother Dhamso has been introducing many great personalities to mother Lanka and she here appears in the World Wide Web, for the first time in her proud history. |

In
human history, there are times when stupendous discoveries are made
quite unexpectedly. An ancient prince once went in search of a sheep
that strayed from his flock. He was looking for a stray sheep. But,
suddenly, he discovered right in front of him a fertile valley unclaimed
by anyone. Sri Lanka Cricket was in search of a viable opening partner
for Sanath Jayasuriya. In the same way as the prince found the valley,
Sri Lanka Cricket Team found a suitable opener to partner Jayasuriya
during their tour of England. Today, it is essential that we should
deploy our best expression to esteem Tharanga’s achievements and victory
with the bat that contributed scintillatingly into demolishing the
English opposition. When I was a Graduate Teacher, Prefect of Games
and Master-In-Charge of Cricket at Nalanda, as a School Cricket Selector,
I found for Sri Lanka in late 1960’s, a gem of a cricketer, who could
handle the cherry, with an unparalled dexterity. He was G. R. A. De
Silva from Ambalangoda, who was later known as Ajith de Silva - the
greatest left arm-spinner so far produced by Sri Lanka. Tharanga too
learnt his basics at Dharmasoka, like Ajith de Silva. The current
duo - Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga are from down south. Tharanga is
a self-made cricketer. He started playing cricket as a tiny-tot with
Nuwan, his elder brother. Their small house was near the sea. Sometimes,
Tharanga used to hoist the ball to the sea. That’s how he laid his
foundation to be a partner to establish the world record of 286 joining
with another “Ruhunu Putra” Jayasuriya. Tharanga hails from Werawatta,
Ambalangoda. Tharanga’s beloved mother Badra and father Badrasoma,
(a small time businessman), struggled hard to keep the home fires
burning and to upkeep their children - two sons and a daughter. Tharanga
started his schooling at Devananda Maha Vidyalaya and later entered
Dharmasoka Vidyalaya. He balanced his studies and cricket and captained
the junior teams and later the first XI. Little Tharanga, learnt his
cricket basics, under the dedicated teachers, Asoka Kumara, Damith
Chandralal and Kusum Nandasiri of Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda. On 2nd
August, 2005, Upul Tharanga, for the first time represented Sri Lanka
in a One Day International played at Dambulla Stadium, against the
West Indies. He won his Test Cap on 18th December, 2005, against India.
This left-hander scored his first ODI hundred against Bangladesh and
second century, against New Zealand, and showed what he is capable
of. At the age of 15, he played club cricket representing his home
town - Sinha Cricket Club Ambalangoda. Tharanga, an employee of Seylan
Bank, represented the Bank in the Mercantile Cricket Tournaments.
The Tsunami which struck Sri Lanka killed nearly 40,000 people and
displaced over one million people. Tharanga’s house was completely
destroyed due to the Tsunami. Fortunately, for Tharanga he was not
at home when the Tsunami bashed the coasts of Sri Lanka. But, he lost
all his cricket gear as well as the replicas and cups he won. The
entire house was swept away and they lost everything. Fortunately,
his family escaped. The cricket world has sat up and taken notice
of this bewildering newcomer Upul Tharanga. This spate of recognition
sometimes can under certain circumstances, spoil a newcomer into being
egoistic and heavily self-centered. But, I am positive, unassuming
humble, Tharanga, will never forget his past and will always respect
his parents, relatives, villagers, teachers and coaches. I wish him
well to conquer the World with his bat and bring credit and honour
to Sri Lanka. |
