The spirit of Dharmasoka history
Creator of the college
As for as Ambalangoda secures a glorified history overseas and in the
Sri Lankan soil due to its profoundity by and great personalities
Dharmasoka college which is in the heart of the soil town and greatly
respected by its citizens too has a similar proud history.
This was initiated with just a few students (fifteen) by its founder
Mudliar S. Thomas de Silva _ 1913 exhibiting his greater commitment &
dedication. He also spent his own wealth for the development of this
school.
Therefore the name of this great person, a creator of this school with
a record over a century in the arena of education is unforgotten by
people. From that simple fact we can infer how much of our character as a
people we owe to this great man school Administration in the demise of
this great person on April 10th 1929 the Sugatha Sasondaya Samithiya (a
benevolent society) took over the college & place a manger on
administration which is then run by a team of mangers until the state has
taken authority in 1961. Hence twenty five government principals came in
to administration in succession

Expansion of classes and academics
This school was originated as boys school in Sinhala mediun, The
students who completed their primary education got admitted to the
college. It is them reported to have charged school fees from students.
The subjects taught in the college were English, Latin, Geometry, Algebra,
Geography, Pali and Sanscrit and the students were directed _ the exams
conducted by Cambridge University.
Alma mater sails in to a new chapter with the introduction of the
tertiary education advanced level arts classes were conducted for the 1st
time in 1943 while entrance to the university was passible from the year
1945. Whit expansion of studies advanced level science was conducted in
1957. As a result a student entered in to the University in the following
year. It was Jayatissa Bandara to be the first University Entrant in
science steam While S.M. Banduseela got through in Bio Science. Palitha
Kumara singhe was the first medical student in 1960. In a later year, in
1994 students got opportunity to offer agriculture for Advance Levels. As
commerce subjects too introduced in 1960’s the number of university
entrants from every fields was remarkably high. For the faculty of
commerce, Management, Dental and Medical, Students enrolled in years that
followed. It was rewarding to introduce music as an aesthetic subject in
1960’s for while dancing started somewhere in junior level 1980’s.
Aesthetics subjects were introduced for A/L in 1990 onwards. No parallel
classes were possible then. Since the number of students in a senior class
was not more than 25 this situation changed in the course of time having
two parallel classes in 1940’s and 3 classes in 1950’s for each grade. In
1970 this jumped in to 8 parallel classes. By 2000 and 2003 classes of
grade 6 and 10 increased in leaps and bound s having 10 classes for each
grade respectively. At the dawn of 21st century the average rate of
students in a class leapt over 45.
Exam results
It was reported that most of the students who offered Cambridge
(Junior/Senior) exams got through even in this outset. As students
excelled in London matriculation in 1938 a holiday was declared as honor
for students.
During that period nearly 20 or 25 students sat the senior level exams
while 35 students for junior levels. Remarkably 21 had passed at senior
level out of 27 in 1941.Collegekept up this record for a decade (1940’s)
annual with the establishment of university of Ceylon there was a rapid
increase for the university entrance yearly It was five ten in the outset.
This number went up to 14 dramatically the following year. In the 5th
decade this figure remained between 20-30 while it increased rapidly to
100 in the 6th decade.
Today it is the essence of revolution for Dhamso to make a steady
representation in education sphere having students in all the universities
and in other education institutions. Replacing old thatched houses with
storey buildings in a large area school acquires a dignity today. Although
school was built up merely on donations in the beginning state allocated
funds for many new buildings after 1961
Sports and co-curricular activities
The school has a proud history in the field of sports. At present
school gained much fame on this regard. Game of cricket reached the
college at very early date and made much progress by now. This game as old
as school it self. Volleyball, Foot ball, Athletics go back to 1930’s.
Cadetting both junior and senior started in the same period, where as
badminton and table tennis introduced somewhere in 1955. It was in the
same year girls participated in these games. Rugby which was introduced in
1950’s terminated shortly afterwards. Basketball come in to being
somewhere in 196 while swimming introduced in 1968.
Two mile swimming race which in organized by the sports council of the
college is in progress and held annually. Game of chess was initiated in
1994. Netball which continued during 5th decade declined. The western band
established in 1985. It is our heart felt thanks to remember all those who
contributed for the success of these events of our alma mater.
Aesthetic disciplines.
We then reflected on the glorious past of Aesthetics disciplines which
transferred the present generation by its creators. In this field students
showed great performances. After 1987 Students secured all island records
for the first time. In 2002 Two pupils of the college participated in a
traditional upcountry dancing event “Vs banduma” bringing great honor to
the college. They keep up with these performances. They also showed a keen
interest and ability in drama as well
Reflecting on the past
The first emblem belongs to the period of E.A.Jayasooriya, the
principal. The emblem you see today in the one reproduced by Mr. D.D.
wijerathna a former principal of the college. He was the who introduced
college colours. the previous colours were rend and indigo. Then college
song was composed by master Ananda Samarakoon, the composer of National
Anthem also belonged to this age. Another worthy course was the
establishment OBA during this period it was reported in log by Mr. D.T.
Wijerathne who was the pioneer of this enterprise.
Dhamso with its proud history occupies a unique place in the arena of
education in Sri Lanka for
ever. |
